To Paris with love

The terrible attacks which shook Paris to its core on 13 November left us deeply shocked and saddened here at FRANCE Magazine. The news broke just a week before our January 2016 issue went to press and we decided that a fitting way to show our solidarity for the people of Paris would be to change our cover and to ask our many readers and writers to share why they love the city and what it means to them. The response was phenomenal with over 150 entries from all over the world, and we are extremely grateful to all those who took the time to share their feelings with us. After sifting through the many entries we put together a selection for the magazine and came up with our very emotional To Paris with love feature, which you can read here.

Where to stay… self-catered

This month’s accommodation feature centres on great places to stay in France for a self-catered holiday. Whether it’s a cosy, rural gîte or a coastal chalet we bring you the best places to enjoy the freedom of France.

Pyrenean discoveries

Step into the beguiling worlds of Pays basque and neighbouring Béarn in Paul Lamarra’s walking tour through the Pyrénées. In this full immersion tour, our writer Paul Lamarra ventures deep into the Pyrenean countryside, gaining a fascinating insight into Basque culture and history along the way.

Off-piste in Savoie

Discover how to get away from those crowds on the ski slopes with adventure travel expert Judy Armstrong’s lowdown on great off-piste ski locations in Savoie. Discover the charming stone village of Sainte Foy-Tarentaise, with big, glorious off-piste runs or for a total escape from the crowds on the pistes of Les Arcs there is the Col de la Chal. With its rollercoaster slopes, quaint Alpine villages and picnic spots skiing here is a real journey, not just a run. Embark on one of the best off-piste adventures in the area in La Plagne, where a dramatic descent along plenty of open slopes leads you past a stunning waterfall and down into an impressive glacier.

Plus, we show you just how family-friendly a glamping holiday can be, take a stroll in the tiny yet beautiful Burgundy village of Bèze, suss out the best places to eat in northern Brittany and hear from acclaimed author and actress Carol Drinkwater how one corner of Champagne provided her with plenty of literary inspiration.
