“I started and stopped my hunt for an apartment more times than a terrified American driver behind the wheel of a Citroën (who shall remain nameless) attempts to enter the chaos of traffic encircling the Arc de Triomphe.”

American chef and baker David Lebovitz, has lived in Paris since 2004, where he publishes a popular food and lifestyle blog, and writes books about food, Paris or food in Paris. His latest work marks a slight departure by following his journey of buying and renovating an apartment, complete of course with a sparkling new kitchen. Having spent years enjoying encounters with market traders, chocolatiers and pâtissiers, he finds the experience of dealing with notaires and contractors rather less appetising. The inevitable encounters with bureaucratic red tape and with builders for whom the phrase ‘pas de problème’ means exactly the opposite, make an amusing read, which you might relate to as househunters in France. The book is complemented by mouthwatering recipes that conclude many of the 38 chapters.

L’Appart, David Lebovitz, £22.50

We have five copies of L’Appart to give away! Enter by filling in the form below, competition closes on 24 April 2018.
