Planning a beach holiday in France? Whether you’re travelling on a budget or splashing out on a luxury hotel here are 10 of the best hotels and gîtes near the coast in France

In a hamlet five minutes’ drive from Port-Bourgenay and the beach at Le Veillon, La Dagoterie comprises a self-catering gîte and three chambre d’hôte rooms. The gîte has two bedrooms, a large living room and fully equipped kitchen, and there is plenty to entertain the family with swings, a sandpit, garden furniture and a barbecue. The three chambre d’hôte rooms sleep from two to four guests. The property has a large landscaped park and a bike track leading to the beach.

Built more than 100 years ago in a Caribbean style, this charming chambre d’hôte is located in the Calanques national park. Hiking trails lead through the cliffs from the guesthouse, and boating enthusiasts will find sea kayaks to hire at the beach less than 200 metres away. The exotic garden makes an idyllic setting for breakfast, and you can take your pick of the seafront restaurants for other meals. There are three guesthouse rooms including a suite for four, as well as an independent cottage and studio slightly nearer the sea. A shuttle bus to the centre of Marseille takes 30 minutes.

You can enjoy sandy beaches and coastal trails, including the GR34, the so-called customs officers’ path, which runs for 1,800 kilometres along the region’s coast. The four-star Hôtel de la Mer occupies a refurbished 1920s building and has beautiful sea views and direct access to the beach. The owners have created an eco-friendly environment with 18 rooms and eight apartments, a gourmet restaurant and bistro, and a wellness centre with indoor heated pool and spa.
