Christian Louboutin to design iconic London Christmas tree

The French fashion designer has been asked to create the Claridge’s Christmas tree for 2019 and will mark its 10th anniversary

French fashion designer Christian Louboutin has been named as the designer of the Claridge’s Christmas tree for 2019. This is the 10th year that the iconic five-star London hotel has asked one of its distinguished guests to design a Christmas tree in their own distinctive style. Long-time guest Louboutin is to have the honour for the 10th anniversary and will unveil his creation in the hotel lobby on the morning of Thursday 21 November 2019.

“I consider Claridge’s my second home when in London and it is an honour to be invited to design the Claridge’s Christmas tree which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year,” says Louboutin. “Claridge’s is one of the most magical destinations with the tree being one of the city’s highlights at Christmas, and I am glad to bring a little piece of Paris to such an iconic London landmark.”

Born and raised in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, Christian Louboutin’s interest in footwear began in the dressing rooms of the Folies Bergère, the famous Parisian music hall, where he spent time as a teenage apprentice. He went on to work as a freelance designer before establishing his own shoe salon in the city in 1991, and was inspired to create his signature red-lacquered soles in 1993 after seeing his assistant’s red nail polish. His shoes soon attracted the attention of prominent women including Princess Caroline of Monaco, who was one of his earliest customers, Catherine Deneuve, Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna. The red soles of his designs have become synonymous with luxury and celebrity, and more than a million pairs are sold each year. Louboutin later branched out into men’s shoes, leather goods and handbags and also launched a beauty line.

“We are delighted to have Christian bring his festive magic to the hotel,” says Claridge’s co-owner Paddy McKillen. The Claridge’s Christmas tree has long been a seasonal London landmark, and symbolises the start of the festive season in the capital, drawing visitors and Londoners alike to admire its creative design.

The Christmas lights in Paris are a major attraction for visitors to the French capital too, with spectacular displays illuminating the city’s famous streets from November until early January.
