Until October 2016 the right bank of the Seine in Paris was a busy road but now, thanks to the efforts of the mayor Anne Hidalgo, it has been transformed into a pedestrianised area that, along with the left bank which was closed to vehicles four years ago, makes up the Parc Rives de Seine. The stretch of bank is closed to cars every summer for the Paris Plages event but now pedestrians can now wander along the river from the Place de la Bastille all the way to the Eiffel Tower.

The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo has taken a stand against the increasing levels of pollution in Paris. At several times last year, the pollution in the city exceeded the safe breathing limit. Efforts have been made previously to combat this, such as temporarily making public transport free, in an attempt to lower the amount of motor vehicles on the road. Closing the right bank of the Seine to vehicles is just one of her initiatives and she opened the new Parc Rives de Seine on Sunday.
