What’s the cheapest property you have on your books right now?
The cheapest property I have is a stone cottage for €23,000. It is in a rural hamlet not far from a town and has two bedrooms and a garden of about 300m². It needs an almost total renovation, but it has character and could be lovely once finished.
What’s the most unusual property you have now?
I have a property facing the lake in Huelgoat which gives the feeling of being on a boat. It is a stone house but the owners have added an extension of four rooms at the front of the property, all behind large glass doors. The lounge, Jacuzzi room, bathroom and master bedroom all have sliding glass doors opening onto a deck and facing the lake.
How much would you expect to pay for:
1. a detached property with land in good condition?
It is possible to get a detached property with one hectare of land for about €120,000.
2. a three-bedroom town house?
A three-bedroom town house in this area will be between €80,000 and €100,000.
3. a renovation opportunity?
From around €15,000.
Is there a typical architecture or style in Finistère?
The typical houses here are the longères – a long stone property which includes a house and an attached barn that has been converted into a long house.
Why do British people buy houses in Finistère?
This area is very attractive because of its cheap properties. This is one of the cheapest areas of France to buy a property, and it is also easy to commute from England.
What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking of buying in your area?
My advice would be to think properly about your future in this area. Those who are buying a residential property should be aware that public transport is limited, so it is very important to have a car and think about how isolated their property is.
What tips would you give to help people settle into life in the area?
The most important thing is to have a minimum level of French so you don’t struggle too much and can start mixing with the French community. I would also say enjoy a social life with the local people and understand the cultural aspect of this area, which is essential in Brittany.
What are your predictions for the property market in Finistère?
The property market has never been so much a buyer’s market since the beginning of 2013. It is the time to buy here in central Finistère, there is a lot of choice of properties at very competitive prices. The market is not going to change for the next year or two, so there are, and there will be, plenty of bargains.

Peaceful, safe, rural, welcoming, green.
What’s your favourite corner of Finistère?
I especially like the north coast around the fishing village of Le Conquet. The coast is wild with fabulous paths; it is breathtaking.
