Boost for ferry travel

Volcanic ash and strikes prompt huge rise in ferry travel

The Passenger Shipping Association has reported that more than 300,000 additional ferry passengers were carried in April this year compared with the same month in 2009. Ferries carried 1,898,000 between the UK and the Continent (up 12.7% on the same month last year), with passengers on ferries between the UK and France up by 184,000 from April 2009 (a 12.4% increase).

This upsurge is being largely attributed to the uncertainty passengers have recently faced with air travel, due to the volcanic ash and strikes by British Airways staff.
