Every so often, we come across a French property that knocks us for six. This month, Eve Middleton falls in love with this renovation project in the Alps

Getting stuck in to a project is always a thrilling prospect. When I saw this two-bedroom detached house up for sale in the small mountain village of Montmin, my planning instinct kicked in.

Although it’s been partly renovated already, the property still has plenty to offer as a blank canvas. For those like me, who like the idea of making a house their own but lack the funds and time required to start work from scratch, the good news is that most of the groundwork has been covered, including the roof insulation and double glazing. The thick stone walls encompass the master bedroom on the top floor, with sweeping views of the Col de Forclaz – perfect for skiing in winter, or hiking in summer – and an attic space primed for conversion. On the ground floor, the bathroom, kitchen/dining area and lounge are set out ready for use, while the basement contains a separate studio with shower room and toilet.

While the size and space of the main house caught my eye, the garage and barn also included in the €241,000 asking price really piqued my interest. Having somewhere to park the car and being only an hour’s drive from Geneva airport makes accessibility a cinch, and the barn could provide accommodation for many more friends and relatives.

Finally, the name of the house – Maison la Bonbonnière (after bonbon) – makes it a coincidental and fitting prospect for an owner as sweet-toothed as yours truly!
