If you have a budget of €150,000 to buy a French property, you’ll find a vast difference in the types of home you can afford from region to region. The cheapest ‘département’ is Creuse in France’s rural heartland, with an average house price of €610/m2, but this rises to a whopping €4,050/m2 in Alpes-Maritimes on the glitzy Côte d’Azur. So, for a middling sized house of 120m2, you’d pay €73,200 in Creuse and €486,000 in Alpes-Maritimes. Popular areas like Dordogne and Charente are surprisingly affordable (€1,200/m2 and €1,170/m2 respectively) although, of course, the great value for money is part of what makes them so well-loved, along with the gorgeous scenery, seductive food and wine and traditional lifestyles.
