We are looking for a 'white van man' or similar who can bring down some items of household stuff ( fridge-freezer & gas stove )  left in the UK to our house in SW France (Pyrenees Atlantique), any tips or contacts much appreciated!

A sensible option might be to ask for quotes from all of the above, but to also put your request on loadup - http://www.loadup.co.uk/  as they specialise in part loads, and it is very widely used by many different transport operators looking to fill their vans/lorries for return runs all over Europe.

I used them to find move some stuff from the UK to France recently, and had 7 phone calls offering to take my load.  In the end I went for a company that was £350 pounds cheaper than the highest bid, so it pays to wait a few days and compare quotes before deciding on which company to go with.
