I have to confess that I am a man and a clean shaven one, too. And I agree that women have a perfect right to present themselves in anyway they wish.
The point that I was trying to make earlier is that the removal of hair from women's armpits was driven by a commercial company which cleverly insinuated that such hair was unpleasant to look at. This was done to increase a razor manufacturer's profits, not to benefit womankind. The company's campaign was so succesful that women the world over now regard such hair as shameful. Armpit hair is a natural consequence of physical maturity, therefore its absence is a sign of pre-maturity. Natural signs of sexual maturity are being replaced by sanitised, homogenised, industrialised signals which are marketed to make women feel anxious and corporations profitable. Advertising is used to distort people's views of what is normal.
The lack of axillary hair is not the only way in which commercial interests try to infantalise women. Magazines are full of pictures of women on catwalks who are unnaturally thin and "waif like".
The fashion industry seems organised specifically to make women feel bad about themselves. The cosmetics industry makes products which encourage women to believe they can disguise their age.
I remember Julia Roberts' appearance at the premiere of "Notting Hill" and the subsequent attacks by the self-appointed fashion experts. I think that she was being rather brave not to behave like the rest of the herd. It was her body, her choice.

Deodorant works better on armpits that have been shaved and I think that practical consideration, especially in these days of over heated shops, offices and sometimes homes has a significant bearing on the matter....

Well, as a beardie I found it pretty offensive, but then I suppose I was meant to.
I am just worried that you don't seem to have understood what ClarkK and I were saying, simply went into a rant.

Lets face it, if we dressed to protect ourselves from the workings of every mans imagination, healthy or otherwise, we'd probably end up wearing sacks - I think what JT was saying is that while it may be true, it is their problem, not ours.

RH - you said, deodorants work better on shaved armpits. But one of the functions of body hair is to trap air so that the area doesn't over-heat. So unshaven areas produce less sweat, and are less likely to have sweat rash. Any woman who has had a baby in a hot climate knows this

I think that we're going through a strange phase with regard to personal appearance.
I know that many women feel pressured to remove naturally occuring hair, not just from their armpits, but from their faces too. Asian women, in particular, get very embarrassed about it with some of the strongest pressures coming from the men in their own communities. I've even met a couple of American men who keep their forearms hair free.
And what about these anorexic women who have plastic breasts implanted ? I find that very odd.
It's also woe betide you if you get old - look at the tone of this report about Goldie Hawn. I think she looks wonderful at 62.

OK - rant over - Clair perhaps you could make that clickable for me ?

Totally agree Hoddy, if we could all look like she does at 62 on the second photo "au naturel", yet they say
"But, seen in a black lycra vest and matching pants, she appears to have aged dramatically."
To me she looks "svelte" and healthy, it's on the last "glamour" photo she looks far older.
