French Property News has two signed copies of Beth Haslam’s memoir Fat Dogs and French Estates to give away
You only need read the first chapter – even the first few pages – of this breezy memoir to realise Beth Haslam’s aptitude as a storyteller, and her considerable knack for capturing on paper the hilarity of a moment. And there are plenty of these to be enjoyed in the first instalment of Fat Dogs and French Estates, a story following Haslam and husband Jack’s 3,000km jaunt through France in search of their dream home, with two rather portly dogs in tow.
After introductions to her two canines and a contextualisation of her impending adventure, Haslam recounts the quirks, trials and joys she experiences as the foursome travels down from Calais to Aquitaine, to Midi-Pyrénées, across to Languedoc-Roussillon and eventually into Provence. They are armed with a shortlist of 13 rural estates – ideally wanting a sizeable amount of land for shooting – and Haslam is convinced any of them will be perfect; but as it turns out, it’s a less than straightforward process. By the end of it all, the Haslams’ relationship with their eccentric estate agent reaches a critical point. Will they ever achieve their dream, or will they abandon the house hunt and leave France for good?
