This traditional Breton house in Côtes-d’Armor combines modern and traditional features and is only 90 minutes from the ferry port of Saint-Malo

Being a sun seeker, I often focus on the south of France when indulging in some speculative house hunting, which can mean the charms of northern France get overlooked. Brittany in particular offers the beaches and sunshine I crave – although cooler, this northern region still has a characterful feel that draws buyers from across the Channel.

So, I decided to take a look at what I had been missing and discovered this stunning property in Boquero in Côtes-d’Armor. The current owners have enjoyed the property for nearly 20 years and have carefully renovated the interior to make the most of the authentic features, including a 19th-century well, a giant Breton fireplace and exposed stone and beams. Now, it combines traditional charm with modern living, especially the kitchen with has all modern appliances, granite worktops and underfloor heating.

There are five bedrooms in the main house and there is also a two-bedroom gîte which could provide a regular income. The house is set on more than five hectares of land which includes two large woods, two meadows, an orchard, a lake and several ponds creating a haven for wildlife, including deer, foxes, badgers and owls.

One of the advantages of buying a property in Brittany is its close proximity to the UK, meaning it is simple to return to Britain, or for friends and family to visit. This property is less than a 90-minute drive from the ferry port of Saint-Malo and also only 15 minutes from the coast, making trips to the seaside a definite possibility.
