Denmark-born Vincent Van Gogh had a long-standing love of France, spending several pivotal years of his career in Paris and Auvers-sur-Oise as well as in the southern towns of Arles and St-Rémy-de-Provence.

This beautifully illustrated book focuses on the artist’s most productive period: his 15 months in Arles, where he produced his greatest paintings. He became a landscape painter here – capturing the blossoming orchards, golden wheat fields, vineyards and gnarled olive trees of southern France.

The book takes a unique and fresh approach, presenting new information and featuring around 20 images previously unpublished in literature on Van Gogh. Chapters are organised thematically, with themes including seascapes, the Rhône and its canals, flowers and portraits of friends. It also tackles Van Gogh’s tumultuous relationship and collaboration with Paul Gauguin and reveals little-known details on his iconic painting ‘The Bedroom’.

Martin Bailey is a leading Van Gogh specialist and investigative reporter who has curated two exhibitions on the artist as well as a display at London’s Wallace Collection.
