First they claimed that we rented out our house - we dont (would it make a difference?).

In normal circumstances, the tax d'habitation for the year is payable by whoever is living in the house on the 1st Jan that year. If it was rented out, it would be the tenant who would be liable, so it does make a difference. The tax foncier is payable by the owner regardless of who occupies it.

Thanks for the info. I still dont understand how they came to the "rented out" conclusion, we had paid taxe d'hab in the previous year.

Steve, we have the same problem.

First of all no fonciere bill, went to the tax place and requested one.  Didn't send the bill for about 5 months after my visit.  I wasn't too concerned as I was given a fiche de visite so I could always prove that I'd gone there to ask for it.

Had to do the same to try and get the habitation bill.  That was back in early March.  Still no bill but again, I have a fiche de visite so I feel I'm in the clear.

Meanwhile some French friends are furious with me for going; they say that this is France and we don't do things like request bills!  "If you are due to pay anything, you will get a bill.  But, you do not go and volunteer to pay anybody anything until such times as you are requested to pay!"  Same advice from across the board, from my farmer-type retired neighbour to my French teacher who is a very well-educated and cultured liberal type.

Seems like it's just us dumb Brits who worry about paying bills and taxes!

Allegedly avoiding tax is a national sport with the French and they will always look on in curiosity and bemusement when someone volunteers to pay theirs. It no doubt adds to the illusion that we are all filthy rich. Personally I have a little saying;

"It's OK to break the rules as long as you know them and are prepared to pay the consequences"

Just as many Brits will know how to play the UK system to their advantage the French probably know every little dodge, quirk and wrinkle too but I doubt many Brits living in France are sufficiently well versed to play the same game Blink [blink]
