Poirot sometimes would not speak to Miss Lemon, especially if he was pre-occupied by a murder.  And as for Sherlock Holmes - he would go for days in silence.

What nationality were they?  Can we assume that they were French because they didn't speak?

Just think of one of the French movies, where everything is in black and white,
long shots, close-up on the hands pouring the coffee, the cigarette, the smoke, the door closing... not a word...

Being a people watcher, I spend hours watching people reading newspapers drinking  coffee and dealing with the people around them , its fascinating ..............Blush [:$]
