I always have carried two pieces of cabin luggage - my handbag for the journey and a soft bag for the overhead locker.  But I make sure that there is enough space in the locker bag for my handbag, just in case I am challenged.  So far, I haven't been (fingers crossed). What happens to all the nail scissors etc that they confiscate? Cathy ----- Your children won't remember you ironing their pyjamas but they will remember you reading them a bedside story.    Report

Why not post a sensible answer, people will appreciate it more    Report

The handbag contained a purse, my passport, keys and mobile. Nothing else would fit in it, just to give you an idea of how small it is. The waterproof jacket has a small pouch in the centre back, and the whole jacket folds backwards into the pouch, at which point two carrying straps appear from the pouch as it's inverted, and the jacket can then be carried like a small backpack. The jacket weighs about 100 grams. I was carrying the jacket in its pouch, slung over my shoulder with my handbag, and was turned back by security because I had two pieces of hand luggage. As soon as I explained, I was told that I should convert the jacket back to a jacket and would then be allowed to carry it through. Nine months on, and I'm still trying to work that one out.     In the year 2159 If man is still alive If woman can survive, they may find................    Report

Last Summer most UK airports had a "only one item of handbaggage through the scanner rule"..so Handbag = handbaggage. Coat turned into Pouch = handbaggage. Coat not turned into pouch =   not handbaggage.   I know this nonsense tests everybodies patience- you ought to try putting up with this every time you go to work  .     Report

On one of my relatively frequent trips to Paris, again last year, I had my briefcase as my one item of handbaggage. I left Heathrow, arrived in Paris, came back to Roissy, and was stopped at the scanner by a very nice security man who said "madam, do you realise you've got a gigantic pair of scissors in your bag?" He was right. I had. They'd travelled with me from the UK, as they were in my briefcase and had slid down to the bottom of an inside pocket and hadn't come to light when I'd emptied and repacked it. Oh well.     In the year 2159 If man is still alive If woman can survive, they may find................    Report
