I like the little turtle doves too. We have a pair nesting in the field but they sit in the tree by the goose run waiting for the seed leftovers, making this funny little electronic pigeon noise.

There are very few nesting sites for Bee eaters in Charente-Maritime, none in Deux-Sevres. So, depending on where you are in CM you could be hours from a nesting zone in CM, Charente, Vienne or Gironde. They require a very specific habitat structure, the right soil in the right place.
A not wonderful photo of one entering a nest hole, but they are fast.

Oh Chris, how disappointing! But OH was convinced that he heard a nightingale a couple of nights ago. Would we have those here in CM?

Bug gers never stop singing here at the moment. All night, and I reckon there is a gang of them. Too busy listening to sleep me. But Chrispp, why?
Do not try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

The reason that they sing at night is to attract the femails who only migrate overnight. The reason for that is that they are too nervous to fly durng daylight for fear of being attacked by other birds. So the males sing their hearts out and what a beautiful sound it is.
We don't tend to hear them very much here. I'm not sure why, but I would assume that they aremigrating further North to you lucky lot?

The only difference between the men & the boys is the size & the shape & the price of their toys!!
