There are very few nesting sites for Bee eaters in Charente-Maritime, none in Deux-Sevres. So, depending on where you are in CM you could be  hours from a nesting zone in CM, Charente, Vienne or Gironde.  They require a very specific habitat structure, the right soil in the right place.

A not wonderful photo of one entering a nest hole, but they are fast.

Oh Chris, how disappointing!  But OH was convinced that he heard a nightingale a couple of nights ago.  Would we have those here in CM?

I'm sure if your OH thought they heard a Nightingale they probably did, not many birds sing at night and certainly not like a Nightingale, they do rather like the sound of their own voice. Once again they are not as common in Charente-Maritime as in many other Departements, but you have other birds there that make up for it.

Bug gers never stop singing here at the moment. All night, and I reckon there is a gang of them. Too busy listening to sleep me.  But Chrispp, why?

But I love birdsong, Wooly.  In fact, my wanting to move house is just so's I could be further out in the countryside where hopefully the birdsong is not too drowned out by the traffic noise.

Chris, so what birds should I be looking out for here in south CM?

The reason that they sing at night is to attract the femails who only migrate overnight. The reason for that is that they are too nervous to fly durng daylight for fear of being attacked by other birds. So the males sing their hearts out and what a beautiful sound it is.

We don't tend to hear them very much here. I'm not sure why, but I would assume that they aremigrating further North to you lucky lot?

Steve, you give me hope.  After all, southern Charente Maritime and Northern Dordogne have simply got to share some birds as we are not a million miles apart.

Will no longer mind insomnia if it means I can hear the nightingales!

Heard one, then a second cuckoo last week in 24 - am pleased because last year it didn't find a friend. My neighbour said that if you have money in your pocket when you first hear the cuckoo you will have money all year. Fat chance.

Also what are the night-time 'peeping' frogs - we are not near water - I think they are small and black - en masse they sound like wooden wind chimes. When I hear one I have perfected the call and I am sure they respond - their call gets nearer and nearer. OH thinks I have lost the plot. Would be pleased to know what  I am responding to...
