Ok.... tomorrow, I will go in and have a look for a note. If there is nothing, Ill call their home number and see if there is any answer there. If there are still no clues, I will leave it untill saturday. I need to do the changeover for the other gite and once thats done, if they still havent showed Ill.....I willl.....dunno....call the cops?

You never know what people will do.  When we were young on holiday in Spain there were a couple of English boys there on motorbikes, both called Bob, the two Bobs.  One suddenly got terrible toothache and disappeared.  He drove all the way back to England on his bike to see his dentist and then came all the way back down again!

Maybe these people received a call about a family member who had an accident or was suddenly taken ill, or maybe they realised they had forgotten the dog at home!

They may simply have gone visiting.  Just sent directions to a friend who is visiting us for 2 nights next week whilst she is renting a gite for 10 days near Beziers - better tell her to tell the owner she is going away.  If I wanted to go off for a couple of days in my holiday (with just an overnight bag) I wouldn't necessarily think to let the gite owner know.  Being English I probably would if I saw them, but I do find our French guests much more private.  English guests always tell me where they have been for the day, French ones often don't and sometimes go to their rooms without speaking.  Not rude - just private.  Have you got their car number? If they don't turn up by tomorrow evening you could call the police to check if they have been involved in an accident.  They'll probably come back, perfectly Ok for them to pay for a gite they are not in if they want to.

Cerise

You have a point, perhaps they have just gone visiting but as they are French I might have expected them to at least close the shutters if they were going to stay away overnight.

Well, its 3 oclock, and still no sign of them.

I went in earlier and had a quick look around. No note or any other obvious reason for them to have left, and what appears to be the majority, if not all, their posessions are still inside.

I phoned the only number I have for them, which is the home number in Cherbourg and there is no reply and no answering machine.

Nothing more I can do really, If they havent turned up by tomorrow morning, I will call the police and see what they suggest.
