floating chlorine dispenser

I know this is a stupid question.  I have 200 gram / 3 inch chlorine tablets designed for a pool of 25000 litres (my pool is 11000 litres).  So I have chopped the tablets in half.  Anyway, I have a a floating chlorine dispenser and it has 4 holes.  Currently I have 2 covered, so I am expecting it will dispense 1/2 the chlorine that it would if all 4 holes were uncovered.  Is this correct?  Would it be fair to assume that 1 hole give 1ppm of chlorine, 2 holes 2ppm etc.  Do I need to monitor this daily until I am comfortable the dispenser is releasing enough chlorine?

Also, I am leaving the dispenser in the skimmer overnight, since the pool is covered and have read that having chlorine going directly into your pump and filter may not be a great idea, but it actually suggests on the packaging the put the tablets directly in the skimmer basket.  Any views on this?

Opinions will differ, and I know it's not ideal, but putting the tabs in the skimmers seems fairly harmless - I do it myself.  It might be dodgy if the associated pipework was made from something other than UPVC, whch is fairly easy to identify.

I think using a floating dispenser is pure guesswork, unless you monitor on a daily basis.  I wouldn't assume that the number of holes uncovered relates to much at all.

Thanks.  I will keep an eye on the chlorine levels.  I checked today and I think it may be overdosing the pool.

Hi If you have a liner pool the floating dispenser will leave you with white stains from the clor taking the colour from the liner, they tend to get stuck in one place and the clor dispenses directly below.

In 17years of pool installation i always advise to put all chemicals directly in to the skimmers

hope this helps

There are multiaction galets on the market specifically for liner pools.   PM for details if you like

thanks for all your advice.  I think I will leave it in the skimmer, since a pump is cheaper to replace than a liner!

I lost my internet connection so apologies if I end up making two posts.

There are a lot of people who put their galets in the skimmer but be careful particularly if you have a liner pool as when the pump is off you are allowing a lot of chlorine to build up in the skimmer and then you are injecting a high dose into the pool when the pump comes back on.   If you find yourself in a situation where you need to shock for example, you are better doing it in stages and keep your pump running for the entire time the tablets need to disolve.
