planting at altitude!
going to live in the Jura at 950 m. - would like to plant an orchard, roses, perrenials, etc - any good advice on named species which will grow well - temperatures sometimes drop to -30! Merci...

Re: planting at altitude!
We are at 1000 m and I'm establishing a garden, orchard etc. No real problems so far - look for late flowering fruit varieties in order to minimise the risk of damage. With us the cold / snow seem to be less of a problem than the deer and the free roaming sheep ! We're on acid soil so azaeleas ( ? ) and rhodos do well and so do some heathers and conifers. Roses are happy - so are peonies, lavender, iris and catmint. Daffodils and other bulbs are fine too. A windbreak might be a good idea - how sheltered / protected is the garden ?

Re: planting at altitude!
Thanks for that - I shall talk to a lot of locals and will try and find a local gardener before doing any major planting. We are quite exposed but I don;t really want to plant a hedge as we love the open view. So we'll have to plant accordingly. there are quite a few peonies in the garden already. We are in limestone country, so will keep rhodos and pieris in pots. There is a Delbard rose shop nearby so will get advice from them. Best wishes
