Do you have to pay by direct debit if you live in england? We have had our house for 2yrs now and somebody set up an account for us to pay by direct debit (our french is not good) but so far we have not had a meter reading and have sent in some cards with the meter reading on , as we think they are over estimating what electric we use as we are only there 6 weeks of the year we would like to just pay for what we are using as we use it .Does anybody else do something similar ? has any one any advise please.

Why don't you do it on-line? Go to the EDF site and sign up, you the can give your actual reading to them every 2 months. I have been doing this for nearly a year now and it is really simple.
Once you have signed up to view your account you can then see all your bills thereafter, on the site follow another link to apply for online reading, then every 2 months you get an email to say its time to send in your reading, if you forget they just send you a estimated bill as per usual.
What I do is when we leave the property I take the reading and switch it off at the mains and I put that reading in the next time they request a reading, and if we have not been over again in the following 2 months I just put in the same reading again, They have always been very fast in paying me back when they have over estimated and I forgot to send in the reading.
So if you can do that you might get a nice fat refund.

I used to pay on-line, but the last couple of bills the website has been down, 'a victim of our success' according to EDF.
I phoned them up (I found a number that worked from England), paid by debit card and set up a direct debit. Much easier than trying to do it by sending a RIB, which hadn't worked.
I haven't done the reading on-line, that's a good tip.

It's up and down like a yo yo.
It's working for me at the moment.
The number I called was
0 810 020 333 (0033 810 020 333 from UK). They guy I spoke to said that they have someone who speaks English, but we ended up doing it in French. It wasn't complicated.
Just seen that Ernie Y has found an English-speaking helpline.

I have just been into EDF online and its fine, Just follow my link.
On the left hand side click on 'ma premiere connexion' and follow the prompts to set up 'mon espace client' not sure how that goes now as it was about a year ago. But I just use my email address and a password to get in.
It is all in French I'm afraid but I'm not that good, I do a lot of copy paste and google translate if I get stuck.![Whistles [Www]](/cs/images/emotions/whistling.gif)
when you get the page 'mon tableau de bord' click on the ref no. that will take you to' mon contrat'. On the left hand side click 'je gere mon contrat' then look for 'mon relevé de compteur' click on that.
I have just done this and a message in French tells me that it is not time to make a reading, but when it is there is a place to put your reading.
Easy and you only pay for what you use.
