New Broadband Satellite for France
Reply Quote

Yesterday, SES and Astra signed a deal to provide 2-way satellite broadband for domestic use for the whole of France.  It is marketed under the name of Nordnet and is not especially cheap but if like me you are a loooong way from an exchange then it may be an option.  I haven't had a good look yet but I think it's 399€ for the kit and then 29.95€ (or more) per month

The difference with this is that you don't need a phone line as the upload as well as the download is all done through an 80cm dish.

I suppose for those bereft of ADSL it might be a lifeline but at a substantial cost.

You can't use this, or any satellite services, for VOIP phone calls either.

Why couldn't you use Skype? It's not a very big bandwidth is it?

It's not a question of bandwith but of latency, or delay if you prefer.

Because of the distance to the satellite there is a round trip delay of approximately 0.56 of a second which might not seem like a lot but is hugely distracting in a voice conversation. Other factors come into play also which you can read up on HERE if you feel so inclined Smile [:)]

You'll see that technology exists to overcome the problems but will likely not yet be widely deployed at this sort of consumer level.
