I suspect that this is a 'stupid' question But here goes.

We have an ancient and very unreliable lap top which has wireless and connects to the internet via the livebox.

We have just bought a new Apple and I assumed that as it to has wireless it would connect. However it is asking for a password. I have tried every password associated with the account and the Cle de securitie.but none of them work. Any ideas?

If it's anything like Mr Clair's Apple Mac, you need to enter your Livebox MAC address, usually found on a label on the underside of your Livebox.

And don't forget to liase it with your laptop by pressing the 1 button on the livebox.

You need to go into the Livebox configuration utility, click on system information, scroll down and you will find the 128 bit key/Cle, it is 26 digits, enter that and you should be ok
