01/05/2008, 13:00 Pads Joined on 24/05/2006 Cornwall/ Montage Noir Posts 3,120 Past Participle ? Is there another name for this verb ? as Im being asked to change a pice of text into the PP but I dont have a heading with this title in my verb book. This is all I can find on the subject in another book, Can any one expand on this ? A verb form which is used to form perfect and pluperfect tenses and passives, for eg Watched , swum . Some past participles are also used as adjectives for eg a broken watch . Am I right in thinking these are PP's reçu = received lu = read écrit = wrote Many Thanks     Dirty Tom =^..^= Where ever I lay my paw thats my home    Report

The past participle is the bit of the past tense that comes after the avoir or etre bit. It works the same way in French as it does in English when you say "I have walked" or "he has eaten". In each of these examples the word after the "have/has" bit is the past participle. If you google for past participle you'll get lots of useful (but sometimes baffling) hits. So this sentance would say : Il n'a pas plu et je n'ai pas overt mon parapluie It never rained and I never opened my umbrella ?? which Isnt right but do you have to change every thing else to fit in ? This looks more like It didnt rain and i didnt open my umbrella    After a little more thinking is it..... It has not rained and I have not opened my umbrella .....? In French there is no way to distinguish between these: It rained It has rained It did rain. They would all be "il a plu".
