Close Call

ams 28/04/2008, 18:30

Yeasterday the better half and myself were returning from La Rochelle airport heading for the A837 when we encountered multiple cars flashing us coming in the opposite direction. We initially thought it was a speed trap, but the level of flashing and horn beeping made us nervous so we slowed down to 100k per hour. Then suddenly a car flashed by us driving in the outside lane going in the wrong direction about the same speed as us.

this morning a french neighbour told us that the driver killed himself in a head on collision. We keep seeing the car all day.

Scary stuff ams,

The main problem in that situation is that you really do have no idea which way to go to avoid a head on.

I hope that he only killed himself and not some poor innocent driver.

I noticed that on the news. There were 2 dead, but don't know if they were both in the same vehicle. The driver of the car was a young lad.

How awful.

I think this is the news report, there was only one person in the car... http://www.ladepeche.fr/article/2008/04/28/450906-A61-mortel-contresens.html

That's the one I saw on the news.

This is enough to make your hair stand on end:

The 25 year old driver of the Golf travelling in the wrong direction and the 36 year old driver of a vehicle which was met by it - innocent victim.

This cannot be the same incident this crash was "sur l'autoroute A61 Toulouse-Narbonne", I think somebody is getting their incidents or newspaper reports mixed up unless he drove an awful long way on the wrong side of the road.  This autoroute goes nowhere near La Rochelle.

Why not post a sensible answer, people will appreciate it more

Quite right.  Penalty of "skim reading".!!

Re La Rochelle,  it does seem be a different incident. I thought I saw somewhere that it was becoming a common occurrence.
