Rega was probably the last of the true racing drivers: and a gentleman too boot.

How many of us will have an epithet like these, and still drive competitively for the fun of it at 65.
(His first outings were in his own Austin-Healey Sprite) his autobiography "It's a Matter of Heart"

''the essential modesty of a man who had class to throw away, Clay Regazzoni'' - Nigel Roebuck

"dancer, viveur, playboy and a driver in his spare time" - Enzo Ferrari,
Darling of the Tifosi, particularly at Monza, twice winning the Italian grand prix where he - not Jackie Ickx, not Lauda - was always the favoured Ferrari son

equalled only by James Hunt in his ability to combine professionalism behind the wheel with the extrovert, fun-loving image of the traditional racing driver - Niki Lauda

Regazzoni drove for the small Ensign Team because he preferred "to race with nice people'' Smile [:)]

Well he would really, wouldn't he. Nasty little jerk and the ruiner of Grande Epreuve competition.

Interestingly back in 1972 when I was at Brands each Wednesday testing, we used to meet Ricki Von Opal in the paddock. He was driving Mo's FIII in the European FIII Championship. Another very nice guy.

The team would drive down very early from Mo's works in the  Midlands and later on, Ricki would arrive, yawning the while (we always started at .7.00 AM), in his Rolls Royce SCIII, on which the front nearside wing was rather bent and the front bumper awfully twisted!

Von Opal (the then heir to the car fortune) was very quick that year and in the wet, another Regenmeister.

Sadly for Mo, the FI effort wasn't very successful: he then went to the US and found much success in the CART series, I understand.

(N.B. For the non-affecionadas, Von Opel drove the FI Ensign before Rega).

C'mon boys!

Ronnie Peterson won the 1974 Monaco Grand Prix. He drove for Lotus Ford. He sadly died at Monza 11/09/1978.

My O/H became disenchanted with F.1. in the mid 'naughties'. Last year we had a great agreement. He would watch the first few laps, fall asleep, and I would wake him to watch the last 2-3. Every one was happy.(?)

Can we talk about something else?

What was the worst meal you've ever had and why?. We used to go to a pub in Devon and had a pretty good idea of what we would have. Unfortuantly it had changed hands. I had to order mixed meat salad and was very disappointed that  the meat was pre-packed. we paid the bill, left and would not reccomend it to anyone.

Over to you.

I could chuck in a Petterson story about Lydden Hill circuit but I won't!

One weekend, Mrs Gluey became totally disenchanted 'cos I was working: again............................. it was a Bank Hols.

So, I said, "Get gussied up," (shows me age and my propensity to use Americanisms!), " and I'll take you to X for a nice meal!"

So, she did and I did too.

We drove quite a few miles to the chosen pub - for years listed in Les Routièrs - and without a reservation, were greeted with the world and his wife, mother-in-law, granny and dog sculling around for a table.

I checked in and orderd a table for two. Sitting nicely ensconced at the bar we enjoyed a snifter or two.

Our choice was not complex: grilled fresh rainbow trout, with jacket tatties and a green salad, to be washed down with a nice bottle of Mersault, mainly to be drunk by Mrs G, of course, as I was driving.

After two hours had gone past - our table had materialised after one - we decided to give up: I paid for our apperos at the bar at which point, the new owner appeared and stated that, "We're grilling your fish now!".

I do hope you enjoy it!" I said rather sniffily.

So, we drove home and tucked into tuna sarnies with salad, which was so late by this time, neither of us fancied our dinner.

As meals go, not a raging success.............

Malmesbury was a lovely and typically Wiltshire town, Sweets. I also used to enjoy the wonderful pubs outside in the sticks.

Once did a "Freedom of the City" parade at Malmesbury, the Mayoress was a real weirdo, she took the salute OK but was wearing seriously laddered (raggy even) bright green tights. Very Odd!!!!

That was my Aunt Beryl...  Big Smile [:D]

Was my birthday the day Ronnie departed from this life.  I lived in a flea pit in Central Finchley.  Was woken up at 9am with a Bacardi & Coke by a friend, followed by a gin & orange.  Lunchtime - went out for a Tito's leg (a donner kebab, named after Tito who had had his leg amputated) and a pint (or three) of Old Tom or Old Peculiar at the ??(can't remember pub name) in Hampstead or Highgate.  The rest of the day is a blur.
